I am a clinical psychologist based in Bedford, NH, with extensive training and experience in evidence-based treatment of OCD and anxiety disorders, a background in research and teaching, and an active role in supervising, educating, and advocating through OCD New Hampshire. But my path to becoming a psychologist wasn’t straightforward. My undergraduate degree was in history, and I found myself working in a dull office job. I realized life was too short to be folding junk mail, so I returned to school to study psychology. A clinical internship at McLean Hospital’s OCD Institute exposed me (pun intended) for the first time to ERP for OCD, and I was hooked. Since then, I’ve trained and worked in world-class educational and clinical settings, taught graduate students, and published and presented research internationally– all experiences that shaped how I help clients today: with evidence-based, practical, and compassionate care.
After finishing high school, I earned a B.A. degree in history from Boston College. After graduating, I moved to New Hampshire for a few years and worked in a very dull office job (I literally folded pieces of paper to be sent out as junk mail – I apologize!). I decided to change careers and went back to Boston College to earn a master’s degree in mental health counseling. As part of my master’s degree, I completed an internship at McLean Hospital’s OCD Institute, the leading residential treatment center for OCD, which is where my passion for treating OCD using exposure and response prevention (ERP) started.
I continued my education, earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. As part of my training, I spent two years working in various programs at the local VA hospital. I continue to love working with veterans! As a Ph.D. student (and afterward), I was an active researcher. I continue to read and analyze published research to ensure I amusing the best tools to help my clients. As a researcher, I published 10 peer-reviewed journal articles and presented my research at a dozen national and international conferences, mostly focusing on matters related to religion and spirituality, including helping to further our understanding of nonreligious populations. I am conversant in many different faith traditions (and forms of nonreligious identities), and I am skilled at helping clients with religious or spiritual joys or struggles when it seems relevant.
After graduating, I worked as a tenure-track professor at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS, where I taught students in their M.S. in clinical psychology program and continued my research. I continue to pass on my knowledge and training: I teach as an adjunct professor at Rivier University's Psy.D. program, I supervise graduate students in their clinical work, and I regularly offer continuing education trainings in exposure and response prevention.
When COVID hit, my wife and I realized that it was very important to us to raise our children closer to our family, which is when we moved back to New Hampshire. I completed an additional year of postdoctoral training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where I specialized in providing treatment in their anxiety disorders service and received advanced training in prolonged exposure for PTSD and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-i). After completing my postdoctoral training year, I became licensed and joined a small group practice, serving clients in the Upper Valley and in the Manchester area.
